i made a little experimentaton lately because i made up this conclusion that iñigo became aggresive and hyperactive now that he had longer tv (more of dvd shows actually) hours. but it wasn't late when i realized the other change in his tv viewing habit--he watches toy story 2 more frequently for the past weeks, everyday actually as he's fond of the characters in the movie. and true enough, after he watched the movie one morning and i observed him to be violent as he kicked me, pulled my hair, attempted to ride my back, etc. i asked him why he was doing it and he answered, "like the donkey in toy story"... bingo! the dvd is now in the trash can.
i now have second thoughts if i will still let watch iñigo the other hollywood-made animated movies which we also have dvds of like chicken little, ratatouille, madagascar 2, and cars (i collect them! haha). though they are marketed for children there are some scenes in these movies which i think my son is not yet ready to see.
now iñigo is back to his old favorites like maisy mouse, pooh, and backyardigans. these are also my favorites for him because i observed that he imitates the characters here and pretends that he's like or among them. but still, i limit his dvd-watching to 2-3 dvd shows a day and that's only less than 2 hours of viewing time, enough time for me to tidy up the house or cook our lunch. hehe.

as for tv programs, iñigo isn't much a viewer of these since even me or jude is not fond of watching tv nowadays, except for news or our favorite reality shows. but even with little exposure, iñigo already made up a collection of his favorite commercials, such as...
camella homes - bulilit... bulilit... sanay sa masikip... iñigo fell in love with this commercial, or should i say jingle, the first time he heard it. he puts a smile on his face everytime it's being played or i sing it personally for him. he also tries to sing the song sometimes. but there's nothing more amusing when he tries to copy that boy in the commercial--making small steps sideways as if he's sandwiched between two walls. =D
LBC - spell remittance? =) oh boy... should i be happy with this commercial or not? i didn't know that iñigo likes this commercial only after i turned off the tv while this commercial was being played and iñigo cried to me and said, "watch remittance, mommy." i didnt' get it at first and out of nothing to say i uttered, "what... what do you know about remiitance?"
but iñigo has an answer... "capital L-B-C."
my son also loves watching tv. sadly no matter how many times i tell his yaya to let him watch only playhouse disney shows, she still lets him watch variety shows like wowowee, etc. he even copies some of their games!
ReplyDeleteit's true that some cartoons aren't really good for kids. a kumpare always reminds us not to let our son watch cartoon network or nickelodeon. stick w/ playhouse na lang daw as some of the shows in those channels are really too violent. a cousin of his is now so and uber kulit and naughty, thanks to those. wawa naman. hopefully our sons don't turn out that way. =l
TV definitely has a lot of influence on our kids. They pick up a lot of things from it... from the language to the actions to ideas. There are times Butch and I would be surprised with Kei's language or actions and would ask each other who taught her what, only to conclude that she must've picked it up from the tube.

ReplyDeleteit is commendable that you are keenly observing the changes in your son's behaviors and vigilant in making adjustments to correct any negative effects :=) This is really our responsibility as parents. Even Disney movies can insert something which will surprise us sometimes. It's amazing how ANYONE responsible for making these kid shows these days can even let anything negative be inserted in their programming but something does get through and it is up to us parents to catch it. If we miss it, at least, we make adjust and correct.
ReplyDeleteparang stranger din yan na hahayaan nating makausap ng mga kids natin. we don't know them intimately and we shouldn't fully "trust" it to be right and good all the time. Kids really absorb like a sponge...it is critical that we are with them every step of the way to explain and help them process what they hear, see and feel. :=)
ako man sis naiinis sa LBC commercial na yan...just when our little ones are starting to get the concept of stringing letters together :( sana mas nag-isip yung mga ad companies! i just cant find my sense of humor in this particular ad..hay!

hi, marj! it's a reason why until now i haven't yet subscribed our household to cable channels. aside from the extra php 600 we have to shell out monthly, i don't see any advantages it will bring to us. i'm just going to raise a family of couch potatoes, including myself! hehe. aside from that, i can't always screen what iñigo watches on tv unlike if i just play a dvd i know for sure what he's watching.
ReplyDeletemismo... but i still let iñigo watch tv or his dvd shows since for me it's one form of entertainment which i can't provide. haha. but limited lang talaga and i see to it na educational din. he learned to count in spanish thru dora/diego. we were surprised to hear him one day counting, "uno, dos, tres..." now he can count in both english and spanish. =)

ReplyDeletehehe. baka mas mauna pang mag-spanish ni gab kesa magsalita either in english or tagalog. minsan lang si iñigo manood ng dora/diego actually but now that he's picking up spanish language because of that, mamakyaw na 'ko ng dvds or cds. haha.
